In the fourth quarter of 1992,
the Association for Computational Linguistics established a Special
Interest Group on Multimedia Language Processing (SIGMEDIA). SIGMEDIA
promotes research which focuses on the use of natural language within
the context of a multimedia environment. This includes: (1) the interpretation
of multimodal input, (2) the generation of multimodal output, (3) multimedia
information retrieval and (4) anthropomorphic conversational agents.
